The Question:  Why did Tiger Woods, the undisputed best player in the world,  struggle with his
driving during the 2007 Masters?
Note:  In the just-completed Wachovia Championship at Qual Hollow GC, Charlotte, NC, Tiger again
was 37th in the field in fairways hit, and WON!  Why?...Ideas?
My Answer:  I noticed that Tiger has now experimented with flaring his clubface open on the
backswing.  He had a great deal of difficulty with his driving all week, and was erratic, mostly hitting
the ball to the right
.  He currently ranks 163rd in driving accuracy on the Tour, and still he WINS!
For instance, Tiger only hit the fairway 31 of 56 times.  The field average was 35.  By contrast, Zach
Johnson hit 45 of 56 fairways.  Tiger averaged only 10 more yards on his drives than Zach.  CONCLUSION:
Too little gain [10 yards] for 14 less fairways hit.  He recovered beautifully at times, but just was too erratic.
This finally bit Tiger on the 15th hole on Sunday, when he hit his drive wide right, and then found Rae's
Creek.  The rough at Augusta National is not terribly punitive, so Tiger has some work to do before the U.
S. Open, where the rough is much worse.
Was he trying to emulate the pre-swing "waggle" similar to Mike Weir and others?
